Excellence in Pre-University Education

The IB Primary Diploma Programme (DP)

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) at Australian International School (AUSIS) provides students aged 16-19 with a world-class, internationally recognized pre-university education that opens doors to the world’s leading universities and prepares students for lifelong success.

Our Diploma Programme represents the pinnacle of international education, combining academic rigor with holistic development. As the natural progression from our Middle Years Programme, the IB DP at AUSIS challenges students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage meaningfully with complex global issues.

The program’s international recognition means AUSIS DP graduates are welcomed by universities worldwide, with the comprehensive skill set they develop serving them well beyond their secondary education years.

The IB DP at AUSIS incorporates cutting-edge educational approaches that reflect the latest research in learning and development. Our progressive teaching methodology includes:

Critical Analysis – Students develop sophisticated analytical thinking skills across all subjects

Student Choice – Learners take ownership of their education through subject selection and independent research

Constructivism – Knowledge is built through active learning and real-world application

Child-centred approach – Teaching is tailored to individual learning styles and needs

Range of Skill Testing – Multiple assessment methods ensure comprehensive evaluation of student progress

Transdisciplinary learning – Connections are made across subject boundaries for deeper understanding

Education of the whole child – Academic, emotional, and social development are equally valued

Criterion-referenced assessment – Students are evaluated against clear standards rather than in comparison to peers

AV and AL (Audio-Visual and Active Learning) – Technology and hands-on experiences enhance learning

Open plan learning – Flexible spaces promote collaboration and different learning styles

Multiple perspective teaching – Global viewpoints and diverse cultural insights enrich every subject

  • Total of 6 subjects
  • 3 subjects at Higher Level (HL)
  • 3 subjects at Standard Level (SL)

Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature forms the foundation of critical thinking and communication skills. Students can choose English A: Language and Literature at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), developing sophisticated analytical and writing abilities. For students whose mother tongue is Bengali, we offer Bengali A: Literature at both HL and SL, honoring cultural heritage while building academic excellence.

Group 2: Language Acquisition ensures students become truly multilingual global citizens. English B is available at HL and SL for non-native speakers, while French ab initio at SL provides beginners with solid foundational skills. Advanced French students can pursue French B at HL or SL, building on previous language learning experiences.

Group 3: Individuals and Societies explores human behavior, societies, and global systems. Students can dive deep into Business and Management (HL/SL), understanding modern organizational dynamics and entrepreneurship. Economics (HL/SL) provides insights into global economic systems and policy-making, while Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) at HL and SL examines technology’s impact on society. Environmental Systems and Societies (SL) offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding human-environment interactions.

Group 4: Sciences prepares students for careers in STEM fields and develops scientific literacy for all. Biology (HL/SL) explores the complexities of life sciences, while Chemistry (HL/SL) examines the molecular world and its applications. Physics (HL/SL) investigates fundamental principles governing our universe, and Environmental Systems and Societies (SL) provides an integrated science perspective on environmental challenges.

Group 5: Mathematics develops quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills essential for the modern world. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (HL/SL) suits students interested in mathematics, engineering, and physical sciences, while Mathematics Applications and Interpretations (HL/SL) appeals to those interested in social sciences, humanities, and practical applications of mathematics.

Group 6: The Arts nurtures creativity and cultural understanding. Visual Arts (HL/SL) allows students to explore artistic expression while developing critical appreciation of visual culture and creative problem-solving skills.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Theory of Knowledge challenges students to examine the nature of knowledge itself. Through exploring questions like “How do we know what we know?” and “What counts as evidence?”, students develop critical thinking skills that enhance their understanding across all subject areas. TOK encourages students to make connections between different disciplines and appreciate diverse perspectives on truth and knowledge.

Extended Essay (EE)

The Extended Essay provides students with the opportunity to pursue independent research on a topic of personal interest. This 4,000-word research project develops essential skills in research methodology, academic writing, and independent inquiry that prove invaluable in university study. Students work closely with faculty supervisors to explore questions that genuinely interest them, often leading to remarkable discoveries and insights.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

CAS ensures students develop as well-rounded individuals who contribute meaningfully to their communities. Through creative pursuits, physical activities, and service projects, students learn about themselves, develop new skills, and make a positive impact on others. CAS experiences are student-driven and reflect individual interests and local community needs.

The IB Diploma Programme uses a comprehensive assessment system that evaluates student learning through multiple approaches. Each subject is assessed on a scale of 1-7, with external examinations and internal assessments combining to provide a complete picture of student achievement.

IB Diploma graduates are highly sought after by universities worldwide due to their strong academic preparation, independent learning skills, and international perspective. The program’s emphasis on critical thinking, research skills, and cross-cultural understanding prepares students exceptionally well for university-level study and future careers in our interconnected world.

Many universities offer advanced standing or course credits for successful IB DP completion, recognizing the rigor and comprehensiveness of the program. AUSIS DP graduates have gained admission to prestigious institutions across Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America.

The Diploma Programme at AUSIS builds seamlessly on the strong foundation established in our Middle Years Programme. Students who have experienced the MYP approach to learning, with its emphasis on inquiry, global contexts, and skills development, are particularly well-prepared for the intellectual challenges and independence required in the DP.

The transition from MYP to DP maintains continuity in educational philosophy while stepping up academic rigor and independence, ensuring students feel confident and prepared for their final two years of secondary education.

Beyond academic achievement, the IB DP at AUSIS develops students who embody the IB Learner Profile attributes. Our graduates are inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. These qualities prepare them not just for university success, but for meaningful lives as engaged global citizens.

The international perspective woven throughout the curriculum, combined with our diverse school community, ensures students graduate with genuine appreciation for different cultures and viewpoints. This global mindset proves invaluable in our increasingly interconnected world.

Whether students pursue sciences, humanities, languages, or the arts, the IB DP at AUSIS provides pathways to excellence. Our comprehensive subject offerings allow students to specialize in areas of strength while maintaining breadth across disciplines. This approach ensures graduates are well-prepared for the interdisciplinary thinking required in modern careers and higher education.

The flexibility to choose subjects at Higher and Standard Levels allows students to demonstrate depth in areas of particular interest while meeting university entrance requirements and maintaining a well-rounded education.
